Satoru-kun: The Oracle in the Booth - The Price of Forbidden Knowledge

Quietly standing in the shadows of the city, the green or grey iron boxes known as public telephones are the altars of an endangered species in modern society. It is said that through these altars, one can connect with a spirit of absolute knowledge.

His name is Satoru-kun .

He is a spirit of truth who can answer any question about this world, but he is also a cruel observer who can drag the practitioner into the abyss if a single step is missed.

1. The Summoning Protocol: Magic of a Dying Infrastructure

The ritual begins at a public phone booth in the dead of night, where no one can see you.

The Steps

  1. The Offering : Insert a 10-yen coin (a 100-yen coin is avoided because it might provide “change,” which symbolizes a lingering connection that prevents the ritual from ending).

  2. Self-Connection : Call your own mobile phone number.

  3. The Call : Once connected, whisper into the receiver: “Satoru-kun, Satoru-kun, please come forth. If you are here, please answer me.” Repeat this twice, then turn off your mobile phone and head home.

From this point, the game begins. You will start receiving calls on your mobile phone from an unknown or “unlisted” number.

2. The Countdown: “I’m Right Behind You”

Every time you answer the phone, Satoru-kun announces his current location, moving ever closer to you.

  • “I’m at the station exit now.”

  • “I just turned the corner of your street.”

  • “I’m standing in front of your door.”

This process follows the template of the classic Mary-san’s Phone legend, but Satoru-kun is different. He is an “Oracle” who will grant you an answer to any question.

The final call always brings the same whispered words: “I’m standing right behind you.” ## 3. The Taboo Contract: The Price of Looking Back

The moment Satoru-kun stands behind you, he will tell you the truth to any one question. The identity of a killer in an unsolved case, the name of your future partner, or even the date of your own death.

However, you must strictly follow the “Contract”:

  • Absolute Denial : You must never, under any circumstances, look directly at him or turn around. Even looking at him through a mirror is forbidden. If you see him, you will be taken away—either as part of his “All-Knowledge” or as prey for the other side.

  • Immediate Inquiry : The moment he arrives behind you, you must ask your question without hesitation. Silence or hesitation is seen as “disrespect,” a challenge to his nature.

  • No Arrogance : Do not ask a question to which you already know the answer.

Analysis: The Curse of the Search Engine

There are many theories regarding Satoru-kun’s identity. The name “Satoru” (meaning “to perceive” or “to know”) suggests a “Laplace’s Demon” or perhaps the “lingering thoughts of a search engine” born from the information age.

Modern humans enjoy the “all-knowledge” Satoru-kun once promised at the tip of our fingers via smartphones. But have we become wiser or happier?

The legend of Satoru-kun asks us about the “Responsibility of Knowing.” Once a truth is known, it can never be “un-known.” The rule that you must not turn around is perhaps a manifestation of our subconscious fear: that seeing the truth will cause our daily reality to collapse.
