Poltergeist: The Noisy Spirits and the Pulse of Unconscious Energy

The Protagonist: The “Focus” Person

When a poltergeist haunting is investigated deeply, a curious pattern emerges. The activity is rarely tied to a specific “haunted house.” Instead, it is tied to a specific person .

Researchers call this individual the “Focus.” Statistically, the majority of poltergeist cases center around children or adolescents—typically those in their early teens—who are going through periods of extreme emotional upheaval. When the Focus leaves the house, the activity stops. When they return, the objects begin to fly once more.

The Scientific Theory: RSPK (Unconscious PK)

From these observations, parapsychologists developed the theory of RSPK (Recurrent Spontaneous Psychokinesis) .

During adolescence, individuals experience a volatility of emotions: repressed anger, sexual frustration, family conflict, or academic pressure. For some, these “negative mental energies” accumulate until they reach a breaking point. Unable to be expressed through words or tears, this raw psychic energy “discharges” into the physical environment. Objects move, lights flicker, and glass shatters—not because of a spirit, but because the Focus is unknowingly projecting their internal chaos outward. It is a psychological storm manifest as a physical force.

Case Study: The Enfield Haunting

Between 1977 and 1979, the Enfield Poltergeist in a London suburb became one of the most documented hauntings in history. The activity centered on 11-year-old Janet Hodgson. Witnesses saw heavy furniture slide across floors and captured Janet seemingly levitating in mid-air.

The Duel of Truth and Fraud

Investigators from the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) observed genuine anomalies that defied explanation. However, they also caught Janet and her siblings attempting to “faking” certain phenomena to maintain the attention they were receiving. This highlights a core truth of poltergeist research: the presence of attention-seeking pranks does not necessarily invalidate the existence of the anomalous core. Often, the “real” phenomena and the “fake” pranks coexist as two sides of the same emotional distress.

The “Rapping” and the Release

Traditionally, homeowners would call a priest for an exorcism when a poltergeist appeared. However, if the cause is human, the solution is not holy water, but psychological resolution .

When the Focus is provided with a safe environment to express their emotions or when the source of their stress is removed, the “spirits” usually vanish overnight. The poltergeist is a scream from the subconscious—a demand for attention or a release of pressure that the conscious mind cannot handle.
