Near-Death Experiences (NDE): Staring at the 'Light' on the Brink of Death and the Brain's Final Dream

1. The “Five Stages of Death” Common Worldwide
Researchers of near-death experiences, such as Dr. Raymond Moody, analyzed numerous accounts and revealed that a consistent sequence of processes (the core experience) exists.
Out-of-Body Experience (OBE) : The sensation of looking down at one’s own physical body from the ceiling or the corner of the hospital room. There are many cases where patients testify to having accurately “seen” the conversations of doctors and nurses and the operation of medical equipment.
The Dark Tunnel : Passing through darkness or a tunnel-like space at tremendous speed.
Encounter with the Being of Light : At the end of the tunnel, a “light” filled with indescribable love and compassion appears. There, one reunites with deceased relatives or religious figures (God, angels, or beings of light).
The Panorama of Life (Life Review) : The so-called “flashing before one’s eyes.” One’s entire life up to that point is re-experienced instantly and vividly, not just as memories, but sometimes including “the perspective of others” affected by their actions.
The Boundary and the Return : Reaching a boundary like a beautiful “field of flowers” or a river (like the mythological River Styx/Sanzu), where they are told “It is not your time yet,” and are reluctantly pulled back into their physical body.
2. Science’s Challenge: Is it an “Intracerebral Phenomenon”?
From the standpoint of modern science and neuroscience, these experiences are often explained as “physiological and chemical reactions” triggered by the brain on the verge of death. *Hypoxia (Anoxia) : When oxygen fails to reach the brain, brain cells in areas like the temporal lobe misfire abnormally, causing past memories to flash back (the cause of the life review). *Tunnel Vision : When blood flow to the visual cortex decreases, the peripheral visual field darkens, leaving only the center shining brightly. This is considered the true identity of the “tunnel of light.” *Release of Endogenous Narcotics : To alleviate extreme stress and physical agony, massive amounts of natural narcotic substances like endorphins and ketamine-like chemicals are released in the brain. This is said to produce the “overwhelming euphoria” characteristic of NDEs. *The DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) Theory : The theory that DMT, a powerful hallucinogen naturally secreted from the human pineal gland (dubbed the “spirit molecule”), is released in massive quantities at the moment of death, projecting mystical, otherworldly visions.

3. Fragments of “Truth” That Science Cannot Explain
However, not all near-death experiences are neatly wrapped up by physiological explanations.
In the famous “Pam Reynolds Case,” a patient who—for the purpose of surgery—had her brainwaves completely flattened (EEG silent), her body temperature lowered to 15 degrees Celsius (60°F), and all blood drained from her brain, accurately described the shape of the specialized surgical saw used in the operating room and the conversations of the medical staff. The fact that “perception” existed while the brain was objectively non-functional poses a massive challenge to current materialistic science.
Furthermore, many who survive near-death experiences universally undergo a “loss of the fear of death” and dramatic shifts in their cosmic outlook on life (an increase in altruistic behavior, a decrease in material attachments). It is exceedingly rare for mere “dreams” or “hallucinations” to cause such profound and permanent personality changes.
4. What Lies Beyond the Boundary?
We conventionally think of death as “the end of everything.” Yet, what near-death experiencers uniformly articulate is the profound realization that death is merely a “transformation of consciousness” or a “transition to another place.”
Is it the final, merciful illusion constructed by a dying brain, or the memory of the “soul’s homeland” that we have all forgotten? That answer will only become clear at one’s own final moment—a destination every soul must eventually reach.
