Mana: The Invisible Fuel Consuming the World's Aura

For the adventurer in an RPG, Mana is as familiar as breathing, yet its true nature is a mysterious energy that is difficult to define if questioned.

The fuel for a mage’s spells, or another name for “MP (Magic Points).” However, the history of this word over thousands of years is a record of civilization itself—how humans have defined “Invisible Power.”

1. Origins: The “Prestige” and “Aura” Dwelling in Oceania

The roots of the word “Mana” lie in the traditional religious views of the Polynesian and Melanesian regions of Oceania. *Social and Spiritual Power : Original Mana was not mere energy. It was a concept that integrated “Prestige,” “Efficacy,” “Luck,” and “Virtue.” Winning a battle, bringing a good harvest, or attracting people—all successes were considered evidence that Mana resided in that individual or place. *Neighbor to Qi and the Force : Much like the Eastern “Qi” or the “Force” in Star Wars, Mana was an essential force for living that exists everywhere and fluctuates according to certain disciplines or taboos (tapu).

2. Transition: Redefinition as a “Resource” by Larry Niven

The redefinition of this vast spiritual concept as “finite fuel for driving magic” was the work of Larry Niven in his 1969 short story The Magic Goes Away. *Waning Magic : Niven depicted a society where Mana, which once filled the world, was being depleted like coal or oil due to overuse by mages. This idea of “Magic as a Physical Resource” had a decisive influence on subsequent game design. *Magic: The Gathering Impact : In 1993, the world’s first TCG, Magic: The Gathering, adopted a system for drawing Mana from Land. This burned the concept of “Mana = Cost” into the minds of gamers worldwide.

3. Nature: Why is Magic a “Blue Liquid”?

In modern fantasy, Mana is often represented as a glowing blue liquid or potion. *Symbology of Water and Spirit : While “Red” (the color of blood) is assigned to Hit Points (HP) which govern physical energy, “Blue” (reminiscent of the infinite sky, sea, and calm intelligence) is assigned to Mana, the mental energy. *Managed Mystery : Mana, once an object of awe, has now transformed into a convenient tool managed on a character sheet and “replenished” by potions. This change reflects the human desire to overcome mystery and control it as a system.

4. Cultural Context: Rediscovering the “Connection” with the World

The reason the term Mana has become so widespread may be that we fundamentally seek the sensation of being “connected to the world through invisible forces.”

It’s not just about consuming spells; it’s about drawing out the heartbeat of the world and turning one’s own will into power. Mana is the lingering scent of “Awe” in the digital age, allowing us to regain mythic connections in a modern society dominated by matter.

*Wizard : Seekers of knowledge who decode the laws of Mana to achieve maximum effect with minimal consumption. *Yggdrasil : The axis of the cosmos said to pump Mana from the root of existence. *Ability Scores : Especially “Intelligence (INT)” and “Wisdom (WIS)” affect one’s affinity with Mana. *Ley Lines : Massive veins of Mana flowing deep within the earth.
