Magic Schools: The Academic Cage of Mystery and Logic

In a fantasy world, magic is not merely a miracle. It is a “discipline” that is observed, researched, and systematized. Magic Schools are the crystallization of knowledge that distills the uncontrollable mana of the natural world into a fixed format called a “Spell,” making it reproducible for anyone (or at least those chosen).

1. Classification: “Systems” based on Interaction Methods

In many fantasy settings, especially classic systems like D&D, magic is classified into several “Schools” by its nature: *Evocation : Converts mana directly into energy like fire, lightning, or ice. The most destructive school that directly challenges the laws of physics. *Illusion : Deceives the senses and makes things that don’t exist appear real. A psychological approach that rewrites the “interpretation” of the world. *Transmutation : Changes the very properties of matter. The pinnacle of alchemy, turning lead to gold or rock to mud. *Necromancy : Manipulates the boundary between life and death. A dark discipline involving the binding of souls and the animation of the dead, often carrying ethical taboos.

2. Philosophy: “Ways of Seeing the World” by School

In magic studies, the school one chooses reflects how that wizard “sees the world.” *Conjuration : Views the world as a “Space of Deficiencies” and seeks to complement it by calling forth necessary entities from other planes. *Abjuration : Defines the world as a “Place of Threats” and devotes its heart to building barriers to reject and sever them. *Divination : Considers time to be a single book and seeks to see through the present, past, and future by turning hidden pages.

3. Ethics and Cost: To Know is to be Transformed

Those who step into the abyss of magic schools experience changes beyond the mere accumulation of knowledge. *Mana Pollution and Madness : Highly advanced magical theories carry the risk of burning out the fragile human brain. Within the deepest recesses of magic schools lies “Truths that must not be known,” reminiscent of Lovecraftian themes. *Academic Detachment : Wizards who shut themselves in academies and treat mana as mere numerical values sometimes forget the living emotions and pain of reality, staining their hands with cold experimentation. The history of magic schools is also a history of ethical struggle.

4. Cultural Context: The “Demythologization” and Reconstruction of Magic

As civilization develops, magic schools transition from a “privilege of the few geniuses” to “systematic education.”

This process of “Demythologization” leads High Fantasy toward a more robust reality. We project both our respect for modern scientists and our undying curiosity about the unknown into the figures of mages who demand mathematical precision in every incantation.

*Wizard : Seekers of knowledge who study magic as an orthodox discipline. *Mana : The supernatural power of the natural world that fuels the engine of magic studies. *Ability Scores : A high “Intelligence (INT)” is an absolute requirement for mastering advanced magic studies. *Arcane Libraries : Places where the results of magic studies are accumulated and forbidden knowledge is sealed.
