Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs: The Golden Rule of Races Defined by Tolkien

In modern fantasy RPGs, the image of Elves wielding bows, Dwarves digging for gold underground, and Orcs attacking in legions has become as natural as the air we breathe.

However, the one who established these clear racial archetypes was undoubtedly J.R.R. Tolkien. He took fragmented entities from Norse mythology and folklore and systematized them into “living civilizations.” Tolkien’s racial settings have become the unshakeable Gold Standard of modern fantasy.

1. Elves: The “Noble Immortals” Who Love the World and Mourn its Decay

Before Tolkien, Elves were often confused with small, mischievous fairies who helped cobblers. Tolkien redefined them as the “Firstborn,” born before Men. *The Weight of Immortality : They do not die of disease or old age, and carry millennia of memories. Consequently, their civilization possesses an overwhelming nobility, yet is constantly haunted by the “Melancholy of Decay” as they are left behind by a changing world. *Fusion of Art and Magic : Magic to them is not a force that bends nature, but an “Art” that brings out its maximum beauty. The reason their swords and clothes glow is because of the high intellect and love poured into them.

2. Dwarves: The “Hardy Folk Under the Mountain” Carving Stone and Wealth

Dwarves were gifted by Tolkien with their character as a race “forged from the earth itself.” *Obsession with Creation : Their supreme joy lies in carving stone and forging steel in the depths of the earth. They are master craftsmen, yet notoriously stubborn—never bending a decision once made—and tenacious enough to carve their debts and grudges into stone. *The Gold Curse and Premonition of Doom : Their thirst for wealth often summons “Dragons,” leading their kingdoms to ruin. This inseparable nature of “Creation” and “Greed” grants the Dwarven race its human depth.

3. Orcs: Distorted Souls and “Organized Violence”

One of Tolkien’s greatest inventions was defining Orcs as a “Horde of Evil.” *The Tragedy of Origin : According to legend, Orcs were born from Elves captured and tortured by dark forces until their minds and bodies were twisted. Thus, they hate light and they hate life. *Efficient Evil : They are not mere barbarians; they utilize technology, explosives, and cold military organization. Through Orcs, Tolkien embodied a “Modern Evil” that ignores individuality and transforms everything into functions of production and destruction.

4. Cultural Context: Races Became the “OS” of Characters

The racial images Tolkien defined were later disseminated worldwide through games like Dungeons & Dragons.

Today, the reason we can infer a character’s ability and personality just by hearing “Elf” is because Tolkien installed a “Common Language of Races” into our collective imagination. Fantasy is a story about the “Clash of Different Cultures,” and Tolkien perfectly prepared the “Board” for that clash to take place.
