Creation of Cosmic Terror: Cthulhu Mythos
In modern horror and fantasy, the name Cthulhu Mythos has become synonymous with unavoidable terror.
This collection of stories created by the early 20th-century author H.P. Lovecraft shattered classical fears such as “dualism of good and evil” or “demons that harm humans.” What lies there is an overwhelming Universal Indifference that does not have enmity toward humans, but simply “does not consider humans even as dust.”
1. Cosmic Horror: The Boundary Between Understanding and Despair
The essence of the Cthulhu Mythos lies in the philosophy of Cosmic Horror (Universal Terror) flowing behind the stories. *Insignificance of Humanity : The universe is vast and filled with high-dimensional existences (Great Old Ones) that humans cannot perceive. It is a mere illusion to think humans are the masters of the world. *Ruin via Truth : Normally knowledge is power, but in the Cthulhu Mythos, “knowing the truth” leads directly to “insanity.” The true form of the universe far exceeds the capacity of the human brain, and touching even a fragment of it shatters the balance of the mind.

2. Shared World: A Chain of Ever-Expanding Madness
What is unique about the Cthulhu Mythos is that it didn’t stop with Lovecraft’s creation alone, but developed as a “Shared World” by many authors. *Lovecraft Circle : Allies such as August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard (author of Conan) borrowed setting names and grimoires from each other, creating a reality as if this myth were a hidden history existing in the real world. *Systematization and Retraction : Derleth later systematized the myth by assigning evil gods to the four elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth). While controversial for some, it is also true that this classification made it a common language easily incorporated into modern games and novels.
3. Modern Influence: Pop Culture Peering into the Abyss
The influence of the Cthulhu Mythos now goes far beyond the framework of literature. *Sanity as a Measure : The concept of “Sanity Points (SAN Values)” born from the TRPG Call of Cthulhu is now so pervasive it has become a net slang. The system of quantifying fear and managing it as a character status was revolutionary. *Redefining the Abyss : While “monsters” in the past were targets to be defeated, since the Cthulhu Mythos, they have been reconstructed as “giant powers that are incomprehensible and must be escaped, or merely waited for in prostration.”

4. Cultural Context: Why We Crave Cthulhu Now
While we live in an age of scientific omnipotence, we sense that the cosmic abyss being unraveled by science is actually a cold place that does not need humans. The hideous yet irresistible charm of the Cthulhu Mythos may be a paradoxical intellectual curiosity—an awe of the “Great Abyss” lurking behind this orderly civilization and a desire to reconfirm our own tiny existence.
