Atlantis: The Lost Utopia and the End of 'Hubris'

In modern fantasy and SF, Atlantis is synonymous with an “Advanced Ancient Civilization” that wielded flying machines and magical science. However, the sole and absolute source of this legend lies in two dialogues, TimaeusandCritias, written by the philosopher Plato in the 4th century BCE.

What Plato depicted was not an adventure stage, but a cold political thought experiment on how human " Hubris " (arrogance) destroys a nation.

1. Geometric Paradise: The Urban Design of Poseidon

Plato’s description of Atlantis was surprisingly concrete and mathematical. *Triple Concentric City : At the island’s center was a temple to Poseidon, surrounded by alternating rings of water and land. This perfect geometric structure symbolized that Atlantis was at the pinnacle of order and harmony. *The Glow of Orichalcum : In Atlantis, the metal “Orichalcum” (mountain copper), second only to gold in value, was mined and used to make the walls glow red. This fictional metal became the prototype for legendary materials in countless fantasy works.

2. Corruption and Divine Punishment: Disappearance in a Single Day

Initially, the people of Atlantis were descendants of gods and valued virtue. However, after centuries of prosperity, the “Humanity (Ego)” within them awakened. *Rampaging Desire for Rule : They became drunk on material wealth, invaded other nations, and finally attempted to seize the lands of Greece (Athens). To Plato, Atlantis was a model of a “powerful but morally bankrupt military power.” *The Judgment of one Day and Night : To punish their hubris, the god Zeus brought forth intense earthquakes and floods all at once. Atlantis was swallowed by the sea in just a single day and night, along with its proud civilization. This dramatic curtain call—an “Erasure” from history—granted the tale absolute mystery.

3. From Allegory to Occult: The Legend Takes on a Life of Its Own

Since the 19th century, Plato’s allegory began to be reinterpreted as actual history. *The Influence of Ignatius Donnelly : After the politician Donnelly proposed the theory that “Atlantis was the mother of all civilizations (Egypt, Maya, Aztec, etc.),” it transformed into a staple of mystery as the “Lost Advanced Ancient Civilization.” *Fantasy Template : In works like Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Disney films, and numerous RPGs, Atlantis is repeatedly reborn as a tragic icon of “a civilization that possessed technology surpassing the modern world, yet destroyed itself with its own power.”

4. Cultural Context: Why We Continue to Search for the “Sunken City”

Nearly 2,400 years after Plato’s writing, we continue to scour the seas for traces of Atlantis.

It is not just geological interest. The legend of Atlantis is both a “Warning” and a “Longing” for us as we build our civilizations. A city that once held advanced technology yet lost its soul and vanished. Its silent underwater ruins continue to ask us, in every age, about human pride and its limits.
