The Shining Trapezohedron: The Window to the Haunter of the Dark

Among the artifacts of the Cthulhu Mythos, the Shining Trapezohedron combines visceral terror with a vast cosmic scale.

It is more than a gem; it is a distorted “Lens” connecting our world to extradimensional entities—a cage containing a fragment of a god that rejects all light.

1. Anatomy: The Black Polyhedron with Red Veins

In Lovecraft’s The Haunter of the Dark, the object is described with chilling precision: *Irregular Geometry : At first glance, it appears as a black crystalline mass. Upon closer inspection, it is revealed to be a complex polyhedron (a trapezohedron) whose angles seem to shift and change depending on the observer’s perspective. *The Living Crystal : The stone is shot through with thin red striations. In absolute darkness, it emits a faint, unnatural light that feels darker than the shadows around it—a suggestion of a pulsing, malevolent life within the stone.

2. History: From Yuggoth to Providence

This stone has traced a cursed path through history, far surpassing the lifespan of humanity. *Origins : Manufactured by the “Elder Things” on the distant planet Yuggoth (Pluto) . *Lost Civilizations : It was kept in the Elder Things’ city in Antarctica, then moved through Atlantis and Lemuria, leaving a trail of ruin in every civilization it touched. *The Black Pharaoh : In ancient Egypt, the forbidden Pharaoh Nephren-Ka possessed the stone and used it for dark rituals before his name was erased from history. *The Starry Wisdom Cult : In 19th-century Providence, Rhode Island, the “Church of Starry Wisdom” worshipped the stone in a decayed belfry on Federal Hill.

3. Function: The Vessel of the Haunter

To gaze into the stone in total darkness is to look directly into the bottom of the abyss. *Information and Summoning : Garing into the stone allows one to see alien landscapes and lost eons. However, this process acts as a beacon for the Haunter of the Dark —an avatar of Nyarlathotep. *Light: The Only Barrier : While the Haunter possesses immense destructive power, light is its absolute poison. Gas lamps, electric bulbs, or even flashes of lightning can banish or bind it. To own the Trapezohedron is to enter a state of eternal fear—praying that the lights never go out.

4. Legacy: The “Forbidden Fruit” of the Stars

The Haunter of the Dark was written by Lovecraft as a “counter-assassination” story for his friend Robert Bloch (who had previously “killed” a Lovecraft-like character in his own fiction).

The Trapezohedron serves as the archetype of the “Cursed Artifact” in the Mythos. It preys on human curiosity, offering glimpses of cosmic truth only to drag the owner into an unbearable, pitch-black ruin. It is the Cosmic Version of the Forbidden Fruit .

*Nyarlathotep : The god manifested through the stone. *The Haunter of the Dark : The three-eyed horror that dwells within the shadows. *Nephren-Ka (The Black Pharaoh) : The Egyptian ruler who first brought the stone into human history. *Yuggoth : The distant star where the Trapezohedron was synthesized.
