SCP-087: The Stairwell

1. The Light-Swallowing Abyss

Located on an unassuming university campus, SCP-087 is an unlit, platformed staircase. Once inside, the laws of physics begin to bend: *Light Absorption : Even industrial-grade floodlights are ineffective. Light is absorbed after approximately 9 meters, creating an opaque wall of darkness that follows the explorer. *The Auditory Trap : Explorers hear the sound of a child crying and pleading for help. Calculations suggest the sound is coming from roughly 200 meters below. However, no matter how many flights of stairs the explorer descends, the sound never gets closer. The stairwell is not a location; it is an “organ” designed to lure prey into the deep.

The face in the darkness of SCP-087.

2. The Records of the Lost

The Foundation has performed four recorded explorations using Class D personnel.

The logs record the mental erosion of the explorers as they descend for miles. Mathematically, they have passed through the Earth’s crust, yet the concrete stairs continue, identical and indifferent. The true terror isn’t just the dark—it’s the lack of change. It is the realization that you have left reality and entered a space that has no intention of letting you return.

3. SCP-087-1: The Watcher in the Deep

Explorers eventually encounter SCP-087-1 : a pale, featureless face that appears in the darkness. It has no pupils, nostrils, or mouth. It simply stares. In the fourth and final exploration, the face appeared much closer than ever before, followed by a total loss of signal.

The entrance to SCP-087 is now welded shut with reinforced steel. We do not know what SCP-087-1 is waiting for, or how far it has climbed up toward the surface since the door was closed.
