Sessho-seki: The Lethal Breath of the Nine-Tailed Fox

In the town of Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture, sits a jagged, dark rock on a desolate slope where the air is thick with the scent of sulfur and even the birds are silent. This is the Sessho-seki (The Killing Stone). True to its name, legends have long claimed that any living creature—be it bird, beast, or human—that ventures too close will meet a sudden and inexplicable death.

This is not mere superstition. In this location, the “Modern Poison” of volcanic gases (sulfur dioxide) and the “Ancient Poison” of a legendary demon’s grudge have dissolved into one inseparable manifestation of lethality.

1. The Roots of Evil: Tamamo-no-Mae

The Sessho-seki is said to be the petrified remains of the “Golden-Haired Nine-Tailed Fox,” a creature that attempted to destroy the nation during the late Heian period by seducing Emperor Toba under the guise of the beautiful Tamamo-no-Mae . *The Fall of Beauty : Her true identity was exposed by the yin-yang master Abe no Yasunari. After fleeing to the plains of Nasu and being pursued by an army of 80,000 warriors, she was eventually struck down. In her final moments, she transformed her immense spiritual power into a great stone. *Undying Malice : Even without a physical body, her hatred did not dissipate. As a stone, she continued to wither the surrounding land and drain the life force of everything that crossed her shadow.

A desolate rocky landscape with yellow steam.

2. The Resonating Strike: The Monk Genno

During the Muromachi period, a renowned monk named Genno visited the site, distressed by the lethal miasma poisoning the region. It is said that he performed a ritual, chanting sutras while striking the stone with a massive staff (or cane), successfully shattering the evil within. *The Scattered Shards : The rock broke into pieces and flew across Japan, creating multiple “Sessho-seki” in different regions. In Japanese, the term Genno became a synonym for a heavy hammer, a linguistic legacy of this legendary act of destruction (or salvation). *The Reality of the Gas : Scientifically, the deaths around the stone are caused by high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide. The legend served as a vital cultural warning: it interpreted the invisible “Lethality of Gas” as the “Grudge of a Yokai” to preserve human life.

3. The Omen: The 2022 Rupture

In March 2022, news spread globally that the Sessho-seki had “split cleanly in half.” The sacred shimenawa rope was severed, and the rock lay open to the sky.

While scientifically a natural phenomenon caused by erosion, many found a dark omen in the event—the “return of the supreme demon.” The Nine-Tailed Fox is historically described as a “Beast that Destroys Nations,” having allegedly brought chaos to India and ruined Chinese dynasties before arriving in Japan. If she has indeed been unleashed once more, the “poison” of modern social instability may already be the result of her influence.
