Freemasonry: The Fraternal Order with Secrets

While often treated as the execution squad of a “dark organization pulling the world’s strings from the shadows” in the context of conspiracy theories, its reality is the world’s oldest and largest Fraternity , existing since the late 16th century with millions of members worldwide.
They define themselves not as a “Secret Society,” but as a “Society with secrets.” The organization itself is public, but they share traditional rituals (passwords and handshakes) to enhance internal bonding (Trust) as their “secrets.”
1. Operative and Speculative
Their origins lie in the medieval guilds of stonemasons.
Operative Masons : True stonemasons who actually quarried stone and built cathedrals. They needed to keep their advanced architectural knowledge (geometry) a secret.
Speculative Masons : The form that nobles and intellectuals began to join from the 17th century onwards. They reinterpreted architectural tools (like the square and compasses) as symbols for “moral and philosophical lessons.”
Modern Freemasonry belongs to the latter, “Speculative Masons,” functioning strongly as a kind of adult social club .
2. Degrees and Structure
The structure of Masonry inherits the traditions of the craftsman guilds.
The foundation consists of the three degrees known as the “Blue Lodge.”
Entered Apprentice (First Degree)
Fellowcraft (Second Degree)
Master Mason (Third Degree)
All authority resides in the Third Degree, “Master Mason.” The “33 Degrees” often spoken of in conspiracy theories are merely honorary titles in a later derivative organization (the Scottish Rite), and they do not yield command over the entire organization.

3. Conspiracy Theories vs. Reality
Misunderstandings of World Domination
While it is rumored that Masonry has a Grand Master aiming for a unified world government, in reality, the Grand Lodges of each country are independent , and there is no unified world headquarters.
In the first place, “debates on politics and religion” within the lodges are strictly prohibited.
This is because their goal is to avoid conflict through debate and to deepen universal brotherhood.
Many Great Historical Figures
George Washington, Mozart, Winston Churchill, Colonel Sanders.
It is an undeniable fact that many great historical figures were Masons.
However, they did not join to conquer the world, but rather to seek a spirit of “Freedom, Equality, Fraternity” transcending social status, as well as an intellectual salon and culture.
4. Why Are They Targeted?
It is because their “secrecy” and “network of elites” easily invite the suspicion of outsiders.
Their long-standing conflict with the Catholic Church is also a factor that fostered conspiracy theories.
The closest true picture of them is not an “evil organization,” but rather conservative gentlemen trying to protect “good old moral discipline (liberal arts).”
